A Unique Plug In Hybrid SUV

I’ve been looking forward to test driving the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) for some time and having now had the chance, I was not disappointed.

The top variant is called the Exceed and it comes with most of the features you would expect from a modern car including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, 360 degree reversing cameras, navigation, touchscreen entertainment unit, electric tailgate, etc, etc. But there are two features that I think make this EV stand out from the rest.

The first is that it’s a roomy SUV. While most PHEVs tend to be compact or small cars, the Outlander is an SUV with all the room for five adults and storage in the rear. The ‘Normal’ driving mode is configured for efficiency and suitable for casual driving whether around the suburbs or along the freeway. Switch it into ‘Sport’ mode and the power and responsiveness is significantly increased. Add to this the combinations of 4WD that alters the distribution between front and rear wheels as well as the ‘slip’ between left and right, and you get options suitable for everything from cruising to maximum traction in slippery spots.

The second and most outstanding feature is the number of configurations you can choose for the mix of electric and fuel engines that drive the car. Most hybrids on the market are primarily a combustion engine with electric assist but the Outlander PHEV is primarily an electric engine with a combustion assist/backup. This means that if you’re just using it to run about your suburb every day, you could literally run it on electric only and never buy fuel again but with the added benefit that if you did want to take a longer trip, you have the combustion engine to take you as far as you need.

This is a best of both worlds option suitable for Australian conditions and worth taking a look at.
