AFL Legend Simon Black Visits Park Ridge High

AFL champion and former Lions player Simon Black descended on Park Ridge State High School last Wednesday to share with students his secrets to kicking goals – on and off the field.

Black, a 3 time premiership player and recipient of the Brownlow and Norm Smith medals, made a guest appearance at the school as part of their AFL Excellence Academy on the 20th October, where he ran a leadership lesson for 20 seniors, and AFL training for 80 juniors.

Director of AFL Excellence at Park Ridge State High Zac Mclean, says Simon’s training program was a hit, and a rare chance for the students to learn from one of the best in the sport.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to be visited by a champion of the game, and have a leadership session for seniors that taught them more about team culture and what it takes to be successful,” Mr Mclean said.

“Obviously coming from such a successful side from the early 2000’s, just sharing those success stories from his time at the top level and being able to share that knowledge with our students is so valuable.”

“I just really appreciate him getting involved and for him to take the time out of his day to come and teach us it is fantastic and we appreciated it.”

Mr Mclean says this event was made possible by the hard work that he and his AFL Excellence department put in, and he hopes it will inspire the students to dream big.

“My self and one of the other teachers were in contact with him through the Simon Black Academy for a couple weeks,” Mr Mclean said.

“We were just trying to strengthen the partnership between our AFL excellence program and his Simon Black Academy which is a post school pathway.”

Park Ridge State High’s AFL Excellence Academy will continue as normal to train students to play and succeed in professional AFL, already producing success stories such as Jade Ransfield, who participated in the program and is now a Brisbane Lions player.
