Pauline Malone from Park Ridge turned her passion for statue making into a small business in February 2021.
Livingstone Statues operates from Pauline’s backyard off Mount Lindesay Highway, where she creates statues and birdbaths from start to finish and sells them for affordable prices.
“It was just a hobby, and now it’s turned into a business, and I love it,” she said.
Miss Malone had always been creative and enjoyed drawing, pottery, beading and various other forms of art.
After she resigned from her job as an aged care worker in 2019, she found a small statue-making business for sale in Inverell.
“I took the leap and went and bought it, and brought it back here,” Pauline said.
“It was a big mish-mash of molds in disrepair, and I’ve been repairing them ever since I bought them.”
The name “Livingstone Statues” was inspired by the way Pauline felt her statues came to life.
“They come alive when we paint them,” she said.
With a collection of almost 2,000 designs, Pauline made sure there was something available to suit every taste and budget when it came to decorating people’s backyards.
Pauline’s showroom stocked everything from realistic-looking hand-painted animals, fairy garden pieces, birdbaths, kombi vans, wall mounts, and more.
Statues ranged from $5 to $200 per piece, with birdbaths between $50 and $320, and any sold-out items could be pre-ordered.
All the materials were high-quality and expensive because everything was sourced locally.
Pauline said the most rewarding thing about her work was seeing people “smiling and saying thank you”.
The biggest challenge she faced was heavy lifting, but she had friends and family who were always willing to give her a hand.
Great care and detail went into every piece from mixing concrete, pouring molds, curing, hand-painting, sealing and water-proofing the pieces.
“It’s a massive process in statue making – I didn’t know there was,” she said.
“You’d think it’s just a bit of cement poured into a mold and then popped out, and it’s not – it’s all trial and error.
“Some items I can handle up to nine times before it even comes out to the floor for sale.”
Livingstone Statues is located at 3920 Mt Lindesay Highway in Park Ridge and is open from 9-5 from Monday to Saturday. Weekdays are by appointment only.
