Digging up our Past: 25 year old Time Capsule Opened at Park Ridge State School!
by Ros Richardson (Deputy Principal)
Park Ridge State School, this year, celebrates its 125th anniversary. To mark this special milestone, the first of several planned events took place last Thursday, April 23, with the digging up of a time capsule buried near the school flagpole in 1995 (during the school’s Centenary Year celebrations).
Anticipation was high, as five ‘1995’ staff members assisted the principal, Mr Peter James, Ms Sherron Butterworth (Deputy Principal) and groundsman, Mr Grahame Foster, to complete the dig. Lyndal McNeill, Debbie Kuskopf, Ros Richardson, Maria Addison and Debbie Byrne are current staff members who were also on staff in 1995 when the time capsule was buried. Chris Genrich was also on staff in 1995 but was on leave at the time of digging up the time capsule. They remember when it was concealed but all struggled to remember exactly what was placed within the time capsule. After lots of guessing, the treasure was finally revealed.
The time capsule contained 1995’s ‘brown and yellow’ school uniform items including the ‘stubbie’ shorts; the Centenary Year Book, the Centenary Song lyrics and a tape recording of the choir singing it, 1995’s school roll, a camp diary, the Year 6 Newspaper and school work of many of the 686 students who attended Park Ridge State School in 1995.
The thrill of opening ‘post’ from 25 years ago has ignited the school’s passion for their long history. They are keen to bury another time capsule this year, to be opened in another 25 years (2045).
With Cov19 impacting school life considerable in 2020, Deputy Principal, Ros Richardson, says, “It would be wonderful to capture recollections of what school was like in this ‘unique’ year for the cohorts and staff of 2020 so the '2045 school community' might see how technology saved the day”.
Despite the current limitations brought on by social distancing, Park Ridge State School plans to continue their 125th celebrations further towards the end of the school year.
Park Ridge State School was officially opened on April 23, 1895.
