George Stretton – Postmaster, Farmer and Publican by Anoushka Arro
On my door knocking rounds I came across some lovely people who live on Middle Road – Cheryl Taylor and her mother Josephine Stretton. They mentioned that after doing their family history search, they discovered that the Suburb of Stretton was named after George Stretton who is the great Grand father of Josephine’s late husband. Josephine has lived in the same house at Boronia Heights for 60 years and so has seen lot of change over the years.
Queensland Place Names registry says that “George Stretton was born near Derby in England and migrated to Australia, settling south of Brisbane. He took up duty as the first postmaster at Browns Plains in 1872 and also worked as a publican and mail contractor. In 1876 the Strettons ran the hotel at Browns Plains.”
George Stretton owned several properties on Middle Road.He ran Cattle in the area down where Middle Road is now.
