Greenbank Over 50’s Walking Soccer manager Bruce Webster is one of four finalists in the running for the 5th annual Enriching Communities Greenbank Community Hero 2021 award.

Mr Webster has been recognised by Enriching Communities for his community spirit and championing an active lifestyle for seniors.

“As the group’s gotten bigger, the group’s gotten healthier and capable of more exercise,” Mr Webster said.

“I’ve lost 10 kilos in the past 12 months playing walking football and I’m down to where I’ve always wanted to be.”

Mr Webster attended the first club meeting in 2019 to learn about the new game of Walking Football coming to Australia.

Football Australia asked Bruce to run the group as their representative, and he immediately spread the word and invited locals to join them for weekly outdoor exercise.

Bruce said the group was a great place for people over 50 to make friends, get fit and enjoy spending time together.

“It’s quite a social close-knit group,” he said.

“People come for the exercise, the company, and the laughs.”

The Walking Soccer group meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 -10:00am in the summer months, and players enjoy a bite and a drink together at Middle Green afterward.

Monday sessions are more relaxed, while Football Australia representatives referee Wednesday and Friday sessions.

Mr Webster said one of the most rewarding things about his volunteer role was helping people, who may otherwise be stuck indoors, become healthier through walking soccer.

“We do it for the fun and companionship,” he said.

“For the first couple of months you’ll get a little bit sore on the legs, but after that, you get used to it and it’s no problem,” Mr Webster said.

Bruce organises fun matches enjoyed by all who attend and coordinates Facebook posts for the group.

His drive to champion Walking Soccer has helped locals form new friendships, reduce isolation, be a part of the community, and improve their physical and mental health.

The group celebrated their second birthday on September 25, 2021.

Mr Webster is also an active bushcare member for Garragoolba Park in Greenbank and an official Land for Wildlife landowner.

His three-acre Greenbank property is home to native trees and animals including possums, parrots, gliders, and green tree frogs.

He is also a 34-year strong foundation member and life member of a rugby league supporter’s club for St George in Sydney.

Mr Webster has held every position in the executive committee including the role of president, and on November 14 he was presented with the Supporter of the Year award.
