Thanks to a generous New Beith donor, Park Ridge Connect was able to deliver an iPad to 90 year old Irene at Park Ridge South today. It's the first smart device she's ever owned. Setting her up for her first ever video call and watching her beam with joy when she saw her friend on the screen, was a real pleasure.
Donate a Device for Seniors started last month as COVID-19 restrictions began to isolate some seniors who didn’t have access to technology that could bring them face to face with their friends again. “It really does make quite an impact to be able to see a person’s face when you’re talking to them”, said Park Ridge Connect volunteer, Warren Black.
Park Ridge Connect is partnering with Garry Lock who has been educating seniors on the use of their technology since retiring as a Senior Implementation Consultant and starting Simplify Technology. “As I moved toward retirement age myself, I saw an opportunity to help seniors who were intimidated by the technology or just needed a fresh introduction to new technology as it got updated. Whether it’s a smart phone or tablet or their old PC, I help them get to know their device and understand what they can do with it.”
“After trialing a few different types of devices, we have come to the conclusion that for those who have not used technology before, the iPad is probably the best solution. We can keep things very simple on the iPad”, Garry said.
