Murray Hallam’s Practical Aquaponics in North Maclean won two awards in the Education, Employment & Training category and the Sustainability category.

Gail Hallam said the company appreciated the recognition of their work at the Logan Business Distinction Awards event.

“We do receive excellent feedback from both our face-to-face students and our online students,” she said.

Practical Aquaponics, which has operated since 2006, teaches a sustainable farming method where fish waste is used as plant fertiliser, and the clean water is returned to the fish through a “bio-filter” of gravel or clay pebbles.

Barefoot Fish Spa in Browns Plains won the Retail category award, and were selected as finalists in the Beauty, Health and Wellbeing category and the Tourism category.

Barefoot Fish Spa director Simone Trueman said it was great for the team to be recognised and appreciated for all the hard work and effort that went into the business.

“It’s never a one-person job … the whole team works together to achieve the every-day things as well as the long term,” she said.

Barefoot Fish Spa moved from the Logan Hyperdome to Browns Plains in June 2019, and they were nominated for the Logan Business Distinction Awards for the first time this year.

“The last 18 months has been particularly hard on a few industries: retail, hospitality, and tourism in particular,” Simone said.

“I think any business that has managed to persevere and continue to build and grow through that period has done an absolutely tremendous job, because it has not been easy.

“That can’t be possible without good teammates, good people, great clients and a beautiful community base.”group pic 1

“It’s great to be recognised for our efforts and for all the hard work the team has put into building a great business, and the care they put into treating their patients with the utmost respect,” he said.

“The recognition is quite a nice feeling.”

Choice Dental has been in the area for over 20 years and provides a full range of dental work services including braces, tooth replacement options, teeth whitening and general dentistry.

Eden Trees Arboriculture Services in Chambers Flat was selected as a finalist for the Real Estate and Construction category award.

Eden Trees owner Phil Hackett said the nomination sparked a lot of enthusiasm among the Eden Trees team.

“It really spurs you on to try harder and to actually see that we’re making that impact,” he said.

Phil said the team worked wholeheartedly, and that showed in their client testimonies and 4.9-star rating on Google Reviews.

“People are often really impressed by the quality of the team members and the way they treat them, how professional they are, how much they care, how much they communicate and clean up after the job,” he said.

“We celebrate every review that we get … the community has given us constant reviews through the feedback, and that’s how we know we’re on the right track.”

Eden Trees Arboriculture Services was also the winner of the Service Award at the ProTrade United Business Awards in 2019.
