Logan Sportsperson of the Year by Kathleen de Leon
North Maclean Paralympian Nathan Harvey, 32, was recently awarded the Logan City Sportsperson of the Year Award (2019) after cleaning up with two gold medals in Dressage and English Equitation, and a bronze in Show Jumping at the March 2019 Special Olympic World Games in Abu Dhabi .
Nathan is an exceptional person who has reached heights some of us only dream of and it wasn’t easy as he was born with some personal challenges – but he did it anyway! Nathan was diagnosed with Autism at aged 2 and is also legally blind which makes his achievements astonishing.
2019 has been a year of great highs and low lows for Nathan. After his achievements in Abu Dhabi and becoming Sports Person of the Year in Logan City 2019, Nathan had a horrific accident in October with his horse falling on top of him, crushing him and leaving him with life threatening injuries. Nathan spent 5 long weeks in hospital with a broken shoulder, broken ribs and a broken pelvis as well as crush injuries and collapsed lungs. But Nathan’s tenacity and love of life did not let him down as he fought back and not only survived, but thrived, thanks to the love of his mum and the great care of all the doctors and nurses.
Long term, Nathan would like to complete his EA Introductory Instructors Certificate so that he can put together a special Olympics Equestrian team in Logan City so more people with special needs can find their place in the world of horse sports.
By the way, Nathan is also a DJ. So, if you are in need of a DJ or a PA System for your party, and fancy having a Para Olympian perform for you, give Nathan a call! 0456 580 013
