Munruben netball player Martina Reekers was selected for the Queensland Under 19’s netball squad in October 2020.
The 17-year-old had previously been selected for the Under 17’s Queensland team, the Under 17’s Australian squad, and the Under 21’s Australian squad.
Martina said the selection process was still going, and on Sunday 30 May 2021 only 12 of the 30 squad members would be chosen to represent the Queensland Under 19’s netball team.
“This opportunity to represent Queensland again means a lot to me,” she said.
“I will represent Queensland with pride.”
Martina’s passion for the game began in 2016 when she was 12 years old.
Her grandmother was the reason she started playing netball.
“It was always her dream to play and make it big, so I wanted to continue her dream after all she had done for me and my family,” she said.
“I want to make her proud.”
Martina said she trained almost every day of the week.
On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday she would practice court work, and she would go to the gym on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Weekends were game days, and she practiced her shooting every day.
Sacrifices she had to make included spending less time with family and friends.
“Having less time to spend with them is hard, yet I know I’m making them proud by training hard and achieving my goals,” she said.
Martina said her family were her biggest motivation and support system.
“My parents work very hard so I can have the things I have now,” she said.
“They support me with all my decisions and are always at my games cheering me on.
“Without my family I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”
Martina’s dream was always to play for a Suncorp team, then either the Australian Diamonds or the New Zealand Silver Ferns.
“Whatever opportunity comes first I’ll take with two hands,” she said.
