Logan West Community Pantry coordinator Katrina Christie is one of four finalists in the running for the 5th annual Enriching Communities Greenbank Community Hero 2021 award.

Mrs Christie, who is the co-founder and coordinator for Logan West Community Pantry and manager of Restore Community Services, has been recognised by Enriching Communites for her acts of service for others.

She said faith in Jesus was the reason behind the work she, her husband and their charity volunteers did for the community.

“One thing that we really focus on is sharing the hope and the fellowship that we can give to people,” she said.

“Our main motivation is to see people uplifted and empowered in all aspects of life, so it’s very much a holistic framework we try to work from.”

On Thursday nights the Logan West Community Pantry hosts a community dinner at Unit 13/98 Anzac Ave, Hillcrest, and all who attend are welcome to enjoy a free hot meal, drinks, dessert and safe place to form social connections.

“We’ve started to see that people come and connect, build friendships, and have fellowship,” she said.

“That’s been a really big thing for us to see people get encouraged through the word, and just share our experiences and our testimonies,” she said.

Mrs Christie and her husband Mathew have spent more than five years feeding the community through outreach from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and recently returned to Logan to continue their work.

In the thick of the pandemic in June 2020, they recognised the growing needs of families and individuals experiencing hardships and crises in the community and decided to do something about it.

The Logan West Community Pantry was established to provide food and other much-needed resources to community groups, sports clubs, fundraisers, churches, breakfast clubs and other organisations in the Logan West area.

“We give away an excess of 500 kilograms of food a week now,” she said

Mrs Christie has dedicated herself to making a positive change in the lives of others every week across many areas and demographics.

Beyond their local community work, she and her husband have also established a missionary outreach to the small country town of Cunnamulla 900 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.

“We support an Indigenous community out there,” Mrs Christie said.

Their ministry and charity deliver much-needed food and clothing to Cunnamulla residents every few months.

“We’re 100-percent a volunteer-based charity, and anything that we do here goes back into the charity,” she said.

“We rely on the goodwill of the community to support us and help us through everything that we’re doing.”
