Meet Old School Painter with a big Heart for Others by Elijah Buol (Division 8 Candidate)
Logan West is a home to amazing people who inspire us every day. While getting to know my community, I was inspired by the passion and commitment of a local Business Owner, Scott Downing. Scott is a happy husband, married to Kim and a father to two children Liam and Samantha. Scott was born in Woodridge and moved to West Logan in 1990 where he’s lived in Hillcrest, Browns Plains, Park Ridge and now in Regents Park.
Scott and Kim are expecting a Grandchild and are excited to become grandparents. Scott established his painting business, the Cool Roof, in 1990 and 30 years later he’s still serving the community of Logan and beyond. Scott is a Licenced Applicator, Licenced Installer and Accredited Dulux Painter.
I asked Scott about what motivates him to get up every morning and climb on roofs for the last 30 years. With a big smile he said, “I love that customers trust me to do a good job.” Scott mentioned that “trust is very important for any business owner”. Scott said because of trust, many customers leaves him and his staff in their home to continue working on the roof without fear or concern.
Scott and his employees spray schools, clubs, shopping centres, commercial and residential building’s roofs. They paint architect designed houses, custom-built houses, new houses and restore old Queenslanders. Scott said his business has been growing over the years because the Cool Roof offers quality services with high level of satisfaction. Scott is well known for his quality services and attention to detail as an “Old School” painter.
The business employs disadvantaged young people and job seekers looking for work in our community here in Logan. Scott said, “Sometimes they turn up with no boots and shoes but we are able to give them a go and mentor them to build their confidence and change their life through employment.” The Cool Roof currently employs 5 full-time staff including a trainee who are local people across Logan.
Scott is an Old School Painter with many hobbies. He loves playing golf, collecting coins and notes. Scott is also a motor Enthusiast who like go for a drive in his Monaro. Besides, his hobbies and running business, Scott is a friendly and quietly spoken philanthropist with big heart for the community. While not climbing on the roof of buildings doing what he loves. He donates and sponsors many charity services in our community through Golf Clubs. Scott has been providing sponsorship to Hills Junior Golf Tournaments, Black Butt Annual Golf, the Annual Charity Day for kids with cancer and Golf Caddy for blinded person. This is a very impressive sense of caring!
I am always inspired by the spirit of individuals and businesses who extend their helping hands to those who need our support the most in our great City of Logan. It is that spirit of caring and holding each other hands which has been demonstrated by Scott, the Old School Painter with Big heart for others from the Cool Roof.
