Meet the new Principal of Browns Plains State School
Wuanita Meyrick – Principal
The Browns Plains State School students, staff and families know that this really is a better place to be. Every day our school community proudly upholds our values of: Always Learning, Always Respectful and Always Safe.
As the newly appointed permanent principal, I am proud to lead the Browns Plains State School community. With now just under 600 students, our school community is growing as public confidence in their local state school returns. I will continue to boldly give reason for families who live in our catchment to come to our school. Our students love to come to our school and wear their uniform proudly. Browns Plains staff are a balanced team with ranging experiences and interests, who offer a wide range of extracurricular activities for our students.
2020 is set to be the best year on record for us here at Browns Plains State School. This year our Music Department will have their turn to shine, with a significant financial investment in instrument replacement, new music stands and experienced Music Teachers (one classroom and two instrumental music). In the later part of 2020 we will commence auditions and rehearsals for our 2021 School Musical. In this space, we look forward to working with Browns Plains State High School and showcasing our talented students in The Arts.
Our students play in and around outstanding facilities. This year, we are working with our community to build our outdoor play classroom, including elements of forest schooling where children will have opportunities to make mud pies in our mud kitchen, make stick tepees, plant, grow and harvest fruit and vegetables, watch native bees hive and much more. Browns Plains students are naturally inquisitive to the world around them and the addition of this space will help them flourish.
Our sporting facilities include a large multipurpose hall, 2 ovals and various undercover spaces. Our HPE staff teach the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education to all students in Prep to Year 6 weekly. Our annual carnivals cater for our talented students and encourage a high level of participation of all our students.
We also offer our senior students competitive Gala Days with our local cluster of primary schools, in addition to having high representation in district and state school sporting across athletics, individual and team sports.
This year a Joint Development Agreement with a local sporting club will see a clubhouse and toilet block installed on our oval boundary. This development will enhance our connections with local sporting communities.
Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) HUB is currently under construction, with building works underway. When complete, our STEM HUB will provide two purpose built, oversized classrooms to continue to strengthen our deep learning in STEM. We will continue to promote STEM in our wider school community, hosting cluster challenge days, staff professional development and collaboration with our local state high schools. We expect to open this STEM HUB early term 2, 2020.
Our classrooms are all on track for air conditioning this year and are full of eager students and skilled teachers. We have teacher champions working and learning in the space of New Pedagogies ñ Deep Learning and all teachers embed digital technologies to leverage learning.
Last year we saw some of the best results in our school history in regards to NAPLAN with significant growth in writing.
