ENVIRONMENT
How will you navigate the tension between more people moving into the area and the needs of wildlife and the environment?
We need to find a balance between being able to have future land developments and leaving enough bushland for wildlife. I really like some of the developments that leave a lot of the existing bushland in place and houses are built around these pockets/corridors of green space. This practice should be encouraged as this not only aids the surrounding areas to be generally cooler but it helps provide some habitat for wildlife.
TRANSPORT
What are the highest priority transport services and infrastructure you will be advocating for in your division?
The areas of division 7 and Logan West, need a passenger rail service. If there is an alternative to road transportation that is convenient such as a well thought out rail service, this will encourage people to catch trains to and from work. In the interim, I would advocate for more parking at the existing park n ride bus stations to encourage more bus passengers. Community consultation is key for this plan to be effective.
INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING
What can Division 7, 8, 9 & 11 councillors do to assure more of the city budget is invested in the west?
I would like to think that infrastructure spending has been evenly distributed in Logan City, however if it has not, I would make sure it is evenly distributed from this year on. If there were past shortfalls in spending in the west, I would be disappointed. Needs versus wants need to be taken into consideration at times, however fairness needs to be front of mind when determining spending on infrastructure.
FREE HIT
What do you think is the most important issue facing your division and how will you respond to it?
The most important issue for people in division 7 is there is currently no elected councillor representing them. The administrators have done a fair job, however nothing beats having someone in council, elected by the people and willing to go in to bat for their communities. If elected, I will ensure everyone has a voice in council matters and I will work effectively with anyone else who is elected in the other divisions and Mayor.
GENERAL
What is one thing you’d like to achieve during your first term as councillor?
I would like to see facilities in our parks such as change rooms for young children and decent toilets to encourage young families to get out in our city. I would also like to have specific facilities for the youths to keep them active and occupied during their down time. The skate parks in division 7 are very good, however newer emerging sports such as Parkour could have facilities constructed throughout the city.
GENERAL
How can residents in your division be involved and empowered to solve local problems together with council?
Few things beat having a community organisation that meets regularly to discuss community based issues. Community organisations are an effective way to help residents and the elected council representatives to understand issues and to problem solve together. Alternatively, if elected and someone was to email or call me, I would also respond appropriately by working with them and their concerns and keeping them informed as the issue is progressed to a hopeful resolution.
PERSONAL
What qualities, experience or skills make you stand out as a candidate?
I have worked in the Army Reserve, as an engineering tradesperson and in community services for the State Government. During my various careers, I have gained skills in team work, negotiating with multiple parties and understanding government processes. I have an open mind and am able to settle an agreement if all parties are willing to negotiate. I am a good listener and can complete complex tasks individually or in a team in government settings.
PERSONAL
How were you involved in your division prior to announcing your candidacy?
I purchased a house in Logan in 2007 and for many years have enjoyed the community and facilities- especially the parks in Logan. Last year we moved to Logan west and I have become more aware of the challenges and needs of those who live here. Since announcing my candidacy late last year, I have become very involved in local issues and have helped to solve a few problems in the community.
