Queenslands Votes. What this election means for Logan West.

With the exception of a few booths which poll well for the LNP, the electorates that capture Logan West are dominated by Labor – safe as houses one might say.

Jordan, Logan, Algester, and Woodridge are the four state electorates which cover the regions this magazine serves. Labor’s primary vote for these seats at the 2017 election was 39%, 42%, 52%, and 65% respectively.

The area also boasts some high-ranking Labor members, with the current Treasurer Cameron Dick. As well as member for Logan, Linus Power, the likely winner of Labor’s recent cabinet exodus to be promoted from the right faction.

However, every election is different, the issues and circumstances of 2017 are very different to what voters are focused on this time round – global pandemics tend to do that.

So, what should we expect?

The state government’s response to the coronavirus will likely be at the forefront of every voter’s mind come polling day, and we can expect the election result to be an endorsement or rejection of Palaszczuk’s strict border closures and successful containment of community transmission.

Whilst the border closures were embraced in late March, logistical issues soon arose with essential workers, border communities, and long delays to freight.

Further, devastating stories of families kept apart, patients being denied medical exemptions, and people quarantining after the loss of a loved one, has made even the strongest of supporters question the strict measures.

The pandemic will of course not be the only issue concerning our readers this election.

Some other issues developing in the area concern hooning, funding of the Mt Lindesay Highway, wildlife protection, natural disaster prevention, the Inland Rail project, and land clearing.

These issues and more will be explored through our online coverage in the lead up to the election. We will question your member and their opposing candidates on what solutions and plans they have for Logan West.

Park Ridge Connect will also be hosting a Meet Your Candidates event for the electorates of Logan & Algester on Saturday 17 October at Kingdom Life Centre, Park Ridge.
