Three young players from the Greenbank Rugby League Football Club were selected to represent the Met-West Region at the Queensland Rugby League Championships this year.
Sage O’Connor and Jayden Hughes were chosen to represent the Under 11’s team in Townsville from the 5th to the 9th of June, 2021.
Lachlan Charlesworth was selected to represent the Under 12’s team in Cairns between the 24th and the 29th June, 2021.
Lachlan’s mother Carmel Charlesworth said it was a huge achievement for the three boys.
“Everybody is very proud of them,” she said.
The boys were first selected for the Southern Scorpions district team at a school-based trial.
They then played at a carnival against five teams from the other local districts and were selected for the Met-West team.
They would soon play against the other metropolitan teams in hopes of winning the QLD Championship and being selected for the Queensland squad.
Jayden’s grandmother Lynette Hughes said Jayden had only been playing rugby league for a few months after winning state titles as a BMX rider.
“Within his first couple of games he was chosen to try out for the Met West team and got into that team, and now he’s going to Townsville for the state titles,” she said.
Lachlan and Sage had played rugby league since they were 6 years old.
Mrs Charlesworth said Lachlan was a team player who strived to improve his abilities at any opportunity.
Sage “lives and breathes football,” and his ambition was to become a professional football player.
The families have organised a raffle fundraiser to support the travel costs involved in getting the boys and their parents to the competitions.
“We’ve had Bunnings donate a wheelbarrow … we want to fill it with prizes,” Mrs O’Connor said.
“We’ll obviously be promoting everybody in everything we do, so the raffle will highly advertise those who have donated.”
Mrs Charlesworth said donations could include goods, services, or gift vouchers.
“Any businesses or individuals wanting to donate a prize – no matter how small – would be very much appreciated,” she said.
