When Park Ridge residents Kerrie and Andy Shinkarenko dropped into a nursery on the Gold Coast 5 years ago, they probably didn’t expect to walk out having bought a dinosaur, but buy one they did. Then they had to figure out how to get it home. With the use of a car trailer, they secured the 2.5m tall and 6 m long, life-size T-rex and gingerly made their way up the freeway and back to Park Ridge.
“We got some pretty strange looks along the way”, Mr Shinkarenko said.
Unloading the steel-framed and fibreglass bodied monster was a challenge they weren’t quite prepared for but with the help of a neighbour, they eventually got it secured in the front yard.
“It caused quite a stir for the first couple of months. People would stop and take photos and park along the road for the kids to take a look”, Andy remembers.
“Rex even got dressed up as Santa one year. He’s a pretty scary Santa though.”
“Actually, we aren’t sure if we should be calling it Rex or Rexona”, Andy said. “We’ve been told that a male T-rex would be much taller, so maybe this one is female.”
After being re-zoned residential for sub-division, the Shinkarenkos decided to prepare their property for sale and part of that preparation is trying to find a new home for Rex. So if you’d like a life-sized dinosaur to add to your garden, contact Andy on 0400 571 944.
If you haven’t seen Rex yet, get in while he’s still guarding the Shinkarenko property at 147 Rosia Rd Park Ridge South.
