Southern Stars Baseball Club in Regents Park is looking for more male and female players under 16 years old to fill junior player vacancies at the club.

Southern Stars vice president and secretary Karen Gallpen said despite big advertising efforts, the junior team numbers were lacking.

“We put around 10,000 flyers to schools in their newsletters and letterboxes in Logan, and we’ve got 20 players under 12 years of age,” she said.

Karan said parents may have been reluctant to enrol their children in sports because of the impact of Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions, but the club had a Covid-safe plan.

“Southern Stars are a covid-safe facility – we have a QR code when entering the club and designated areas when required.

“We try to reschedule games cancelled by lockdowns.”

The Southern Stars Baseball Club, who celebrated their 25th anniversary last year, offered teams from under 8’s T-ball to over 35’s master’s teams.

The club currently had more girls than boys registered for the 10-16 year old junior baseball teams this season.

“We’ve got two under 10 teams – we just don’t have any junior league teams,” Karen said.

“We’d love to have those older age groups.”

Baseball provided many physical and social benefits to young players, including learning to work as a team and learning new skills.

“I think the highlight for juniors is watching their improvement throughout the season – especially when you get new players with no experience – watching them grow within the sport is just fantastic,” she said.

Southern Stars aimed to see future growth at the club.

Their dream of a premier playing facility was within reach, with an expression of interest to build secure batting cages with the Logan City Council and state government funding available.

The club focused on building players, men, women and children with mentoring, training and friendship.

The baseball season would start on Saturday the 9th of October for Juniors, Women’s on the 2nd October, Seniors on the 10th, and Masters on the 11th.

Juniors and Women’s training sessions would run on Tuesdays 5:30-7:00, and Seniors and Masters training on Thursdays from 5:30-7:30.
