In 1991, a small group of Logan West residents got together to support and encourage each other in their weight-loss journeys. They became known as the Hillcrest Slimmers Group. Twenty-nine years later the group membership has changed but their passion to support each other has not waned.
Julie Gilbert visited the group five years ago as a guest speaker on nutrition and loved the group so much that she joined and hasn’t left. “I saw a genuine friendliness in the group and the way they encouraged and supported each other really impacted me”, Julie said. “Being in a group like this keeps me on course in my weight loss journey, specially when life circumstances get challenging.”
The group which meets every Thursday morning (9AM) at Parklands Christian Church, offers support, encouragement and health and wellbeing education to its members. They regularly invite guest speakers to teach on subjects such as nutrition, exercise, healthy minds, the importance of social supports.
No particular weight loss program is endorsed. The purpose of the group is to support each person in whatever process they are applying. Club members receive weekly, monthly, 6 monthly and yearly awards for losing the most weight. They also hold social events which have developed long term friendships over the years.
When the group started meeting at Parklands Christian Church, they were surprised when Pastor Mike said he didn’t want them to pay rent but encouraged the group to sponsor a couple of children overseas. The group reached out to Another Life International and has been supporting two children in Uganda for the last three years.
They also hold fund raising events throughout the year to support the local community and many other non-profit organisations.
