The Southern Stars Baseball Club in Regents Park is hosting a free open day tryout session for the 2021/2022 season.

People from all ages and abilities are invited to come from 8:00am to 10:30am on Saturday the 24th July 2021 to have a go at playing and see if they’d like to join the club.

Southern Stars vice president and secretary Karen Gallpen, who has been involved with the club for 14 years, said the club was like a family.

“Once you join the club, you become part of the family,” she said.

The Southern Stars Baseball Club, which has been around for 25 years, facilitates several teams from under 8’s T-ball to over 35’s master’s teams.

The club is a place for people to “make friends, build relationships, be part of a team, be included, be family, and be a star”.

Karen said it had been great to see more women get involved in baseball, and the club was very focused on building up their women’s and junior’s teams.

For children, baseball is about teaching fundamental skills including throwing, catching, hitting and base running, and social skills such as teamwork.

“Building confidence in a player is probably the biggest thing,” Karen said.

A junior player’s parent said they had seen growth and development in their children during over 5 years of playing at Southern Stars.

“This club is the best club for families. The committee and coaching teams always accept people, no matter their ability, nationality, disability or gender,” they said.

“Karen, Andrew, and the committee and coaching teams give 100% of their time to help everyone.”

Southern Stars assistant coach Tiffanie said after watching her niece play her first game of rookie ball, she decided to use her baseball knowledge and experience working with children to become an assistant coach.

“It’s safe to say Southern Stars has become a second family for me and my family, where we have made many great friends,” she said.

At the end of each season the club holds an event to celebrate the teams and their involvement.

Karen said the club was also starting to seek sponsorship and donations from local businesses, which would help them raise funds for new batting cages.

Business sponsors would be promoted on the jerseys of their supported teams.
