Tech Tips for Seniors by Gary Lock

Is your computer not working well and doing weird things that frustrate you? You have put up with it for a while and think it’s about time it was fixed. Well, here is something you can try before calling a technician to come and look at your computer.

A simple home fix for a Windows computer to correct niggly problems is to shut it down completely by:

  1. Closing every open program
  2. Select the Windows Start button
  3. Select the Power option and, from the menu options
  4. Select the Shutdown option
  5. Wait at least 30 seconds and then,
  6. Press the power on button on the computer to turn it on again.

This can often “clear its throat” and give you a fresh start.

The reason you do this is that when the computer is turned on, it gets a set of instructions from your hard drive and stores them in the memory of the computer.  Sometimes these instructions can become jumbled, which may produce the niggly problems.  When we shut down the computer it empties the memory of all instructions. When you start the computer next time it will get a fresh set of instructions and this will quite often fix your niggly problems.
