Boronia Heights resident Val Rooney knows that by building strong links with people and groups, we can achieve much in our local community. She has been serving our local area for more than 30 years – first as a Justice of the Peace and as the President of the War Widows Queensland South-West Branch.
Val and her ladies in the War Widows Association meet at Greenbank RSL on the last Friday of the month to support and care for each other, to ensure no one gets left behind and to advocate for ex-servicemen and servicewomen’s partners who are left behind when duty takes their lives.
Val has welcomed many new members in her time as President. She and her executive are actively seeking the best outcomes for war widows, they visit the sick in hospital, and with a new generation of widows, the task seems never ending sometimes.
Val says it’s these unique moments that she and her ladies enjoy. They raise money for Cure for Cancer, organise
friendship days and bus trips for seniors, and love a good challenge.
Last year there was an Australia-wide goal to create 60,000 poppies for the Australian War Memorial to mark the centenary of World War 1 which the ladies took to with much enthusiasm.
The local chapter of the Australian War Widows branch created 1250 for the War Memorial in Canberra and a further 1100 for the YMCA’s poppy display at Bowen Hills.
One of the many uses of these crochet poppies was this recreation of a war period dress (pictured). The dress garnered a lot of attention and the YMCA’s wall display and was a great success.
Val’s commitment to the veteran community stems from her husband Bob who served for 22 years and saw the theatres of war during his tours in Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and Singapore. Her commitment to our local area comes from more than four decades of living here.
Val is a great community member with a big heart and a bigger smile. If you are out and about and see her, say gday.
