On the 29th of July, the Logan West community woke to distressing news: there had been a confirmed case of COVID-19 at Parklands Christian College. The news shocked our community as the school and health officials worked quickly to prevent an outbreak.
Soon after I phoned the Principal, Mr Gary Cully to offer any assistance needed. He was calm, collected and a reassuring voice for our community. I want to thank Principal Cully and the entire Parklands community for their patience and forbearance during what was a distressing and uncertain time.
It would have been a confusing time for the young children who go to Parklands. I am sure there were many difficult dinner table conversations with parents explaining to their kids what had happened. I want to thank all the Parklands parents for their enduring support for their children and school community during this time.
Fortunately, fourteen days later we would be assured that there was no mass community transmission.
The health authorities and school did everything right in response to the virus. Parents were informed and community testing facilities were rapidly set up across Logan including at the Baskerville Sports Centre at Parklands. Record numbers of people were prepared to get tested despite the long queues and play their part in curbing the virus.
As we look at the road ahead, we can be proud of our community’s response and confident that whatever happens, we will continue to support one another because that’s the Logan West way.
