Life & Legacy by Kim Anthony
My wife and I started watching a Netflix show called Suits. We finally got a Netflix subscription a couple months ago. I know, about 5 years behind everyone else.
Suits is quite a few years old now and was made even more famous by one of the cast marrying into royalty. It’s a very entertaining show. It’s about a law firm. Real clever guys. Go getters. The type that do anything to win, earn huge money, live the high life, and have their life revolve around work. In that show you see people make big sacrifices, stab each other in the back, and give up friends and aspects of life most of us take for granted – all for success. And they love it.
This is a good description of the Christian idea of worship. When you worship something, you shape your life around it. You want it more than anything else. You are willing to sacrifice, protect, and give up valuable things that will keep you from it. And when you get it… Well, you delight in it, enjoy it, and love it!
Worship is not a word used often in our culture but it describes a state of being that people long for. People are looking for meaning, something bigger than themselves, something to value, sacrifice for, and adore. We look for it in career, money, fame, ambition, perhaps even someone we love.
The Judeo Christian word used to describe any object of worship other than God is the word… Idol. The point is, any object of worship other than God is lifeless in meaning, guidance, and help. In the long run, you won’t find what you are looking for when you wrap your life around an idol.
Like a speaker I often listen to, Timothy Keller, once said… “Those things can never bear the weight of your soul.”
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23 (NIV)
