Youth invited to experience military style adventures

The Logan City Community Cadets are holding an open day on Saturday November 13, 2021 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at 2 Fern Street in Browns Plains.

The event is in preparation for the Cadets upcoming three-week trial in November.

There will be drill team, drum corp, field engineering, bivouac and tactical displays throughout the day along with slide presentations.

Attendants could have their face painted camouflage-style, experience an obstacle course, create a bridge out of rope and experience a bush exercise.

A free sausage sizzle will be held at 12-noon with cans of soft drink available for $1.50.

Logan City Community Cadets senior instructor Lieutenant Aaron Chase-Currier said the open day was an opportunity for youth and parents to meet the team and have their questions answered.

Mr Chase- Currier said cadets was a great way for teens to gain skills, confidence, discipline, independence and courage to excel in other areas of life.

“It definitely gets them ready for the outside world,” he said.

Cadets experience a range of military skills such as navigation, survival, radio, bush skills, engineering, military field-craft, tying knots, towing vehicles and more.

“The main thing the parents get out of it is definitely discipline … they see their kids start to grow up a little bit and mature as they take a bit of responsibility for themselves.

“They have to cook their own food, polish their own boots, make their own beds in their army shelters and sleeping bags,” he said.

“We do a lot of shooting and we go out bush,” he said.

The Logan City Community Cadets meet every Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:30 pm during the school term.

They host four main camps throughout the year with a few smaller training weekends during the year.

Mr Chase-Currier said Cadets was not-for-profit and the cost per child was very low, with a one-off fee for uniforms and equipment and a small weekly fee to cover a meal and a night of training.

Males and females between 11-17 are invited to attend to learn more about becoming a cadet.
