How local news differs from metro coverage

A Logan West desk keeps school sites, DA numbers and BOM tables that a metro brief will skip. That is the whole difference, and it is enough.

Newsprint columns for a newsroom-method essay.

How is local news different from metro? Metro copy notices Logan West when the highway stops or the river exceeds a round number. Local copy is the file that makes those days intelligible: the 1913 school site, the 1953 hall, A-12 under Bumstead Road, Waterford’s 11.15 metres in 2022 versus 10.50 metres in 2017, the Wineglass centre at 2 Wineglass Drive.

That difference is a method, not a marketing slogan. A metro reporter with six suburbs to file before deadline cannot reasonably live in Logan City Council’s DA search. A local desk that refuses to live there is just a slower metro.

It also changes ethics. Metro crime briefs can strip a crash for parts. A local URL like the Greenbank crash headline sits in the same Facebook groups as the families. We keep the path and drop the wreck.
