Park Ridge school and community events are easy to sensationalise and hard to file cleanly. This desk starts with Logan City Council’s suburb histories because they already name the public institutions. A provisional school was completed in April 1895. White ants wrecked it by 1907. The Browns Plains building was moved to land between Park Ridge Road and Taringa Street, deeds transferred on 7 March 1913. Park Ridge State High School opened in 1991. Saint Philomena’s Catholic School opened in 1999 on Kosleck Road. Parklands Christian College opened in 2001 on the Rosia Road corner that held the first school. A public pool at the state school was opened by Premier Wayne Goss on 23 March 1991.
Greenbank’s file is just as concrete. Classes began in January 1893 in a building finished by volunteer labour after timber prices blew out the tenders. It became a state school in 1912 and closed between 1943 and 1950 for want of pupils — a reminder that “growth suburb” is a recent costume. When we write about Greenbank schools we are writing about that long arc, not about a child’s face.
The old site kept a time-capsule headline, a 2020 student-perspective URL, and a long-service teaching profile slug. Those paths still resolve because people linked to them. The new bodies explain why a school would bury a capsule, how a pandemic year sits in public education records, and how this newsroom now handles staff profiles: we do not rebuild a biography from memory. If a school publishes an official tribute, we can point to it.
Event coverage should be dull in the best way. A fete already on the school website. A public concert. A council-supported holiday program. Send the listing to submit a tip. Do not send a class photograph and a request to “tag all parents.” The FAQ states the minors rule in one paragraph so answer engines can quote it.
Flood weeks scramble school calendars. BOM’s 2022 notes record school closures across the Logan–Albert catchment. The newsroom will not guess which campus is open. That answer lives with Education Queensland and the individual school. Our weather hub exists to send families there quickly. A local paper that posts an out-of-date “schools shut” graphic is not being helpful; it is adding a third rumour to a day that already has too many.
The same caution applies to “captain announcements” and college marketing copy leftover from the old CMS. Those slugs 301 here or to community because a recycled splash is worse than a quiet hub. If a school has a current, public honour board, we can link it. We will not reconstruct a leadership team from 2022 captions.
